1984: COMADRES, EL SALVADOR
Ending politically motivated forced disapperance in El Salvador.
During El Salvador's civil war, a group of women banned together to discover the fate of their disappeared relatives. Eventually growing to over five hundred members, COMADRES fought for the amnesty of political prisoners, information concerning the whereabouts of missing soldiers, and punishment for those responsible for political assassinations. The members of
COMADRES received the first annual Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award in 1984.
