DARFUR ONLINE CAMPAIGN: A REGIONAL PROBLEM, A REGIONAL SOLUTION

Dear Friends,

Most of us think the violence in Darfur is a local problem, confined to Sudan. But the facts, as always, are much more complicated.

With ongoing conflicts in Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR), and with rebels and refugees constantly traveling across the borders of all three countries, the problem is a regional one.

And only a regional solution will work.

President Obama is committed to solving this problem. He is close to appointing a special envoy to deal with the human rights and humanitarian crisis in Sudan. But the focus must be broader than Sudan to solve the problem. The conflicts inSudan, Chad, and the CAR are interconnected, and any envoy must be given authority to deal with the entire region.

I hope you'll join the RFK Center for Justice & Human Rights in calling on President Obama to appoint a regional envoy who will work with all parties to the conflicts, as well as the regional and international communities, to advocate a solution to the crisis.

RFK Center Laureates Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Abdalla of Sudan and Delphine Djiraibe of Chad are traveling to Washington, DC and New York in March to urge the U.S. government and the United Nations to take a regional approach to achieving piece.

They know firsthand the complicated, intertwined history of their two nations -- how the internal politics of one is often played out as violence in the other. They know that 250,000 refugees have crossed from Darfur into Chad, and thousands have moved from Chad into Darfur. They're bringing a message from the people of their countries that this regional problem needs a regional solution.

Any U.S. envoy must have a broad mandate to work with international and regional bodies, governments, civil society, and rebel groups to achieve peace inSudan, Chad, and the CAR.

President Obama has already appointed several regional envoys. And we are asking him to take the same approach to Sudan, Chad, and the CAR.

Join us today -- call on President Obama to appoint a regional envoy who will seek a comprehensive and peaceful resolution to the violence in Darfur.

Sincerely,

Monika Kalra Varma
